Brazil: City officials inspect the Book Biennial for 'inappropriate material'

RIO - In the early afternoon of Friday (6), 12 employees of the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop) arrived at the Book Biennial, which is being held at Riocentro, to identify and seal books considered "improper". The operation, which took place after Mayor Marcelo Crivella had HQ collected with a kiss between two men, lasted until 2 pm and did not learn any work.

In a statement released after the lawsuit was closed, the book Biennial informed that it has filed "a request for a preventive injunction with the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (...) to ensure the full functioning of the event and the right of exhibitors to commercialize literary works on the most diverse subjects - as foreseen by the Brazilian legislation ".

According to Wolney Dias, Seop's operating undersecretary who ran the operation, it was "a search for pornographic material."

"City hall has police power for that," Wolney told local press. - If the material is not following the recommendations, it will be collected. We are following the guidance of the city attorney's office. I do not understand that there is censorship. If it is pornographic material, offered without the standards, it will be collected.
