UN Independent Expert on SOGI issues visits Brazil

This week marks the Day of Trans Visibility in Brazil. On the occasion of the academic visit that I undertook to the country to disseminate the mandate's functions and work, I participated in a public event with leaders of the trans movement in Rio de Janeiro, where I was able to listen to their experiences and dialogue about the global human rights agenda.

I also had the opportunity to express my concerns about the emergence, in many regions of the world, of narratives that attempt to redefine the term "gender ideology", and that in my opinion have the objective of creating confusion about the need to respect the personal liberty and autonomy of all persons.

Those narratives delegitimize the plight of people discriminated on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, and I am concerned about their impact on the violence and discrimination that trans persons suffer in all corners of the world.


Brazilia, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) Brazil is still the most perilous country in the world to transvestites and transexuals in the world, according to the dossier of an association of that community (Anthra) published on Wednesday on occasion of the Day of the Visibility of the Trans. According to the document, 124 trans people (whose gender identity does not match their sex) have been murdered since 2019. Mexico, in the 2nd overall place, reported half that number.
