Dwyane Wade was a 13-time NBA All-Star and, by the time he hung up his jersey last year, he was counted among the best shooting guards to play the game.

Now he’s focused on his most important job off-court, as a dad. The father of four visited “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Tuesday and opened up about the moment one of his kids came out as transgender and how that transformed him as a parent.

“Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — I don’t know if everyone knows, originally named Zion; Zion, born as a boy — came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. Zaya Wade, the 12-year-old daughter of NBA star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union, celebrated her red carpet debut Saturday night with her parents after coming out as transgender last month.

The Wade-Union trio attended the Truth Awards, an annual ceremony dedicated to celebrating accomplishments of the black LGBTQ+ community, wearing custom coordinating Richfresh suits: Dwyane, 38, in a mostly black suit with white color blocking and a pink shirt, Union, 47, in a mostly white suit with black color blocking and green straps underneath, and Zaya, 12, in a green suit jacket with black pants and a pink sash.

"It was an EPIC night filled with so much love & a real sense of community," Union wrote on Instagram. "It was important for Zaya to be a part of such a beautiful night & reminding her of all the love & support she has. We were moved to tears so many times throughout the night. So much gratitude."

Union added in a separate post that the family will keep "leading with love, light, and hope for a better more inclusive world. Stay put and stay mad if you want. We keep it pushing. Always."

The family attended the award ceremony supporting Zaya's godfathers, Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis, who were presented with the Business Leadership Award. Dwyane wrote on Instagram that the award show together was a "dope experience" for the trio. Read more via USA Today
