Trojan Urges Online Retailers to Maintain Condoms as ‘Essential’ During COVID-19 Crisis

As online retailers deprioritize condoms by classifying these important products as ‘non-essential,’ consumers may experience long wait times for their online order deliveries as they institute up to a “30-day” shipping window in comparison to “essential” supplies deemed necessary to help consumers during the COVID-19 crisis.

“More time together, spells more sex,” says Bruce Weiss, Vice President of Marketing for Trojan Condoms. “Trojan believes that condoms are essential to avoid STIs and unintended pregnancies that can be avoided with their use. Condoms are more important than ever before and should be considered essential products amid the COVID-19 outbreak.”

In agreement on the importance of condoms, the NYC Health Department says, “consistent and correct use of condoms are highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.” And, “urges couples to ensure they have effective forms of birth control at home for the coming weeks as they shelter in place.” For the latest information, visit nyc.gov/coronavirus or cdc.gov/covid19.

Additionally, according to the NIH, “Consistent and correct condom use was one of the earliest recommendations for preventing HIV infection at the start of the pandemic outbreak in the early 1980s. It remains an essential tool in preventing the transmission of not only HIV, but also other sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia. Latex condoms offer an impermeable barrier, preventing the bodily fluids that contain active HIV from entering a partner during sex and infecting that person.”

“Trojan is working with our retail partners at a fast and furious speed to keep condoms on shelves and supply the increased demand,” adds Weiss. “We urge online retailers to consider reclassifying condoms as ‘essential’ and speed delivery to all during this unprecedented time.” Read more via Business Wire
