What will change and what remains the same after a new quarantine extension?

President Iván Duque made two important announcements on Tuesday regarding the emergency facing the country on account of the new coronavirus.

On the one hand, he announced the continuation of intelligent isolation until May 31 under current conditions. And on the other, the extension of the health emergency from June 1 to August 31 (in principle, it went until May 30).

Below, we explain what changes and what remains the same after the new extension of the national quarantine.

The first thing to keep in mind is that, as Duque explained, a new phase of intelligent isolation begins on June 1 . In other words, the measure will be maintained, but it will have a gradual approach, understanding the particular conditions of each territorial entity.

Regarding the expansion of the health emergency, which should not be confused with isolation, as they are not the same, the president recalled that this means that the country is on alert and in institutional coordination to take measures to offset the impact of covid-19 in the country.

The continuation of smart isolation until May 31 means that current conditions will be maintained. That is to say, only those who are sheltered in the 46 exceptions provided for in Decree 636 will be able to go out into the streets.

At the moment, it is not known whether more exceptions will be included from June 1 or if they will be fewer. The truth is that for this new stage of quarantine, which will run until June 30, President Duque said that "more collective discipline" will be required.

For now, it was announced that the process of productive recovery will continue, maintaining the rules of distancing and protection. Sectors of productive life will also continue to be enabled.
"That responsible gradualism," said the president, "will be managed with the respective mayors." Thus, the local leaders, as already being applied, will define the exit protocols in each municipality in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. Read more via EL Tiempo
