Poland: The left submits to Parliament the first-ever draft law on marriage equality

by ANTON AMBROZIAK

"This is a historical act, it has never been filed in the Sejm," said Robert Biedroń at the Presidential Palace on June 19, 2020, presenting a draft law on marital equality prepared by the organization "Love Don't Exclude."

"Many said it couldn't be done; that Poland is not ready. They were determined to fight for her. They argued that this was an important thing;

that it doesn't hurt anyone and makes many people happy "

- Biedron said.

And he turned to the opponents in the presidential election. "I want to ask my colleagues to clearly state which side they are on. This is a moment of solidarity with those who came here at the Palace to defend the Constitution, respecting it all and expecting it to be respected also in the context of equal opportunities for others.

Dear Simon, dear Rafal, every democrat should stand on the side of equality. "

Marriages with adoption, relationships with adoption

The Left has submitted two bills to the Sejm today. The ninth draft parliamentary law in the history of Polish parliamentarism and the first draft law on marriage equality. There are two issues.

First, the law on partnerships allows the adoption of a partner's child, but the law prepared by "Love does not exclude"

allows full adoption of children by same-sex couples.

Never before, in any draft laws regulating the family life of LGBT people, such a solution has been found.

The second issue has symbolic value. Partnerships, by emancipation of LGBT people, were often treated as a compromise solution. One that allows the recognition of same-sex couples in the legal order, but without equal rights and status in the social order. Read more via Oko Press
