In the efforts to combat the HIV pandemic in the country and reduce it prevalence, the U.S Ambassador to Namibia, H.E Thomas Daughton will visit a roadside clinic in Walvis Bay, to gain first-hand insights into the provision of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), on 12 October.
PrEP is the safe and effective use of antiretroviral drugs by people who are not infected with HIV but at an elevated risk of contracting the virus.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) programme is based on the HIV Prevention Guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by the U.S. President’s Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Society for Family Health (SFH) and the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) started offering PrEP three months ago and currently manage container clinics at Oshikango, Katima Mulilo, and Walvis Bay.
The will include a media tour through the facility and will be graced by the Erongo Region Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua, Walvis Bay Mayor, His Worship Immanuel Wilfried as well as representatives from the MoHSS, UNAIDS, PEPFAR, and other development partners.
The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the largest commitment ever by a single nation toward an international health initiative – a comprehensive approach to combating HIV/AIDS around the world. Read more via Namibia Economist
