Czech Republic: Hundreds of people have demonstrated to legalize marriage for all

Prague - Several hundred people today demonstrated in Prague for enacting an amendment to the Civil Code that would allow gays and lesbians to marry. The event on Malostranské náměstí was organized by the We Are Fair initiative. By protesting, she wanted to point out that the draft amendment for a year and a quarter lies in the Chamber of Deputies, and MPs have not yet voted on it. Representatives of the initiative called on the Lower House of Parliament to decide on it at its meeting in mid-October.

"We are concerned that the amendment will sweep under the table or be a victim of obstruction. Therefore, we appeal in particular to the YES, Prime Minister and MPs (Radek) Vondráček and (Jaroslav) Faltýnka to vote on marriage for all at the meeting, which starts on October 15. We are also asking the other parties to support this vote, "said Adéla Horáková, We Are Fair Attorney.

Demonstrators gathered on the square with banners saying "I'm not a car. I don't want to register" or "It won't hurt you, it will help us". They were supported on the spot by, for example, STAN Chairman and MP Vít Rakušan, Pirates MP Olga Richterová or ANO Senator Miroslav Adámek. Also included were singer Ilona Csakova, actress Iva Pazderkova, from abroad came Senator from Iowa Zach Wahls or MP for British Conservative Party Nick Herbert.

The amendment to the Civil Code was signed by 46 deputies from various clubs headed by Radka Maxová (ANO), who succeeded in the elections to the European Parliament and is no longer in the Chamber of Deputies. At the same time, the Chamber of Deputies began to discuss the proposal to explicitly anchor marriage as a union of a man and a woman in the constitution. 37 lawmakers, headed by the leader of the KDU-CSL, Marek Výborný, adhere to it. According to the petitioners, this would protect the family.
