Argentina: Silvia Lospennato defends the legalization of abortion: "No one else will decide for us"

As was the case in 2018, the national deputy for Cambiemos, Silvia Lospennato , gave an energetic closing speech in favor of the bill on voluntary interruption of pregnancy , and stressed the need to legislate and "continue fighting for freedom and equality "for women and girls to decide about their bodies.

"At dawn we are crossing the last fence for full legal recognition for the recognition of the autonomy of women. And we are doing it together, no crack could separate us what Argentine politics has not achieved for years," began Lospennato, who in 2018 had been applauded for her words .

After thanking President Alberto Fernández for "keeping his word and sending the bill" for treatment in Congress, she recalled that it was former president Mauricio Macri "honoring his republican vocation" who "decided not to put his personal decision first" to give place to debate.

Then, she stressed: "This law is not owned by any president or government, it is another achievement of the women's movement (...) We returned to this site and we will return to claim our autonomy. If we had surrendered, others would vote for us The equality that we all enjoy, they owe to the women who fight (...) Today we will be legislating for equality. "

Lospennato said that from 2018 to this part "nothing changed . " She said that those who are against the bill "say they do not want women prisoners but they oppose decriminalization and have stopped the law on obstetric practices that stop the distribution of contraceptives in the Senate." In addition, she argued that although the interruption of pregnancy is allowed by law in the event of rape, "every three hours in Argentina a girl is forced to give birth”.

On the other hand, she said that those who are in favor of the legalization of abortion "legislate for the truth" and that "the only truth is the more than 300 thousand abortions that occur, although they condemn them", that the differences pass through those who have capacity to gestate and those who cannot, who can receive sexual education and who cannot, and between those who can access comprehensive health and those who cannot.

"Today, few right to choose a life plan. We want any woman who lives where she lives to have that right. Freedom is the great value of human life (...) Today we are going to give back to women the right to decide about her own body. No one else will decide for us, "she said.
