Same-sex marriage is still illegal in Tunisia!
Despite the news that has been circulating across news platforms and social media lately, same-sex marriage is still illegal and not recognized in Tunisia, regardless of where the marriage has occurred.
We urge journalists, allies, and other organizations to stop sharing this misinformation and to get information and news from reliable sources and from activists who are in touch with the situation.
Homosexuality in Tunisia is still punishable with three (3) years of imprisonment according to article 230 of the penal code. The sharing and spreading of this misinformation all over the media has only contributed to creating more tensions and violence towards LGBTIQ + people.
It created more hostility by putting the queer community under the spotlight, with queerphobic people targeting the community and spreading hate speech.
Queer activism is growing stronger in Tunisia and in the Mena region
Amidst the struggle, the tension, and the vulnerability aggravated by COVID-19, Queer activism is still going strong in Tunisia and in the rest of the Mena Region. Formal and informal LGBTIQ + organizations and alliances continue to exist and to contribute to the fight for sexual and bodily rights of queer people.
There are many projects and initiatives that aim to support members of the Queer / LGBTQI + community, through legal, medical, social support, capacity building, but also through art as a way to raise awareness and to create a safe space to consolidate our intersectional vision of the fight.
We all admire the efforts and courage of the queer organizations in the whole MENA region. We have been networking and working together regardless of the attempts to make our fights invisible, and we commit to continue our work putting the safety and security of the LGBTIQ + community as our top priority.
We are in solidarity with LGBTIQ + communities , refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and sex workers against oppression and violence.
We exist and we will keep on fighting for justice and equal rights for all!

Le mariage homosexuel est toujours illégal en Tunisie !
Malgré les articles qui ont circulé dans les médias et les réseaux sociaux dernièrement, le mariage homosexuel est toujours illégal et non reconnu en Tunisie, indépendamment du lieu où il a été contracté. Nous exhortons les journalistes, les allié.es ainsi que les autres organisations à cesser de partager cette désinformation et de s'assurer de la véracité de toute information auprès de sources dignes de confiance et de militant.es au fait de la situation.
L'homosexualité en Tunisie est passible de trois (3) ans de prison selon l'article 230 du code pénal. Le partage massif et la diffusion de cette désinformation n'a fait qu'exacerber les tensions et la violence envers la communauté LGBTQI +.
En plaçant la communauté queer sous le feu des projecteurs, une couche d'hostilité a été rajoutée par des queerophobes visant la communauté et diffusant des discours de haine.
L'activisme queer se renforce en Tunisie et dans la région MENA,
Aux prises avec la tension, la lutte et la situation de vulnérabilité renforcée par le Covid-19, l'activisme queer ne cesse de se renforcer en Tunisie et dans la région MENA. Les structures et les alliances LGBTQI +, qu'elles soient formelles ou non, continuent d'exister et de contribuer à la lutte pour les droits des personnes queer.
Il existe de nombreux projets et initiatives qui visent à soutenir les membres de la communauté Queer / LGBTQI +, par le biais d'un soutien juridique, médical, social, de renforcement de capacité, mais aussi par le biais de l'art étant un moyen de sensibilisation et un espace sûr pour consolider nos visions intersectionnelles de la lutte. A cet effet, nous tenons à saluer les efforts et le courage de toutes les organisations queer de la région MENA.
Nous travaillons en étroite collaboration depuis longtemps, malgré les innombrables tentatives d'intimidation, et nous sommes fermement engagés à poursuivre notre travail, car la sécurité et la sûreté de la communauté LGBTQI + sont nos priorités absolues. Nous exprimons notre solidarité envers les communautés LGBTQI +, les réfugié.es, les demandeur.es d'asile, les migrant.es et les travailleur.ses du sexe qui subissent oppression et violence.
Nous existons et nous continuerons à nous battre pour nos droits et pour obtenir l'égalité entre tous.tes!
