Costa Rica: Legislative Assembly rejects motion to postpone legality of equal marriage

The Costa Rican Assembly rejected a motion to postpone equal marriage until after the Covid-19 pandemic passes, so on May 26 that right will enter into force.

«Equal Marriage is a legal reality in our country. That will not change. The Inter-American Court and the Constitutional Chamber have made this clear, "said the legislator for the Citizen Action Party (PAC), Enrique Sánchez.

With 33 votes against and 20 in favor, a motion for postponement that sought to discuss the request to the Constitutional Chamber to delay said marriage was rejected.

The Constitutional Chamber had given the Legislative Assembly a period of 18 months to approve a law in accordance with the provisions of said Court and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The judgments of the Inter-American Court and of Chamber IV eliminate the prohibition of equal marriage in Costa Rica, which conflicts with the American Convention on Human Rights. Read more via El Pais
