From October 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019, more than 70,000 same-sex couples in Germany got married or had their registered civil partnership recognized as a marriage. This emerges from a response from the federal government to a request from the FDP parliamentary group, which the German Press Agency (dpa) has received.
According to this, 46,925 same-sex couples got married in the period. 26,293 other couples have had their previously concluded civil partnerships rewritten. No data are yet available for 2020.
Almost equal between male and female couples
According to the Federal Statistical Office, there is almost a tie between male and female couples: As the Lesbian and Gay Association Germany (LSVD) explains, a total of 23,581 male and 23,344 female couples got married from October 2017 to the end of 2019.
In 2019, women caught up with 7,208 couples compared to 6,815 men’s couples. Because between October 2017 and the end of 2018, male couples had a slight lead with 16,788 versus female couples with 16,138.
