Croatia: LGBTI Persons Will Demand Right to Adopt Children

The decision of the Administrative Court to annul earlier decisions rejecting the requests of life partners Ivo Šegota and Mladen Kozic to become foster children is a historic moment and the first step towards full equality of LGBTI persons in Croatia. Now comes the fight for the right to adopt children and the right to medically assisted fertilization for lesbian couples.

It was announced yesterday by the Rainbow Family Association, which brings together LGBTI people who have or want to have children.

This is the first time that a court in Croatia has upheld the international case law and rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, according to which same-sex couples must be legally treated in the same way as heterosexual couples. They also warned that Ivo Segota and Mladen Kozic were not the only couple to claim foster carers status.

"Their courageous act, public appearance and assent to this legal battle is also a precedent for other couples who choose to extend their family in this way and thus provide a warm home, love, daily support and a better future for children who spend their childhood in homes," said Daniel Martinovic , a representative of the Rainbow Family Association.
