France: Senate rejects medically assisted reproduction for all—LGBT+ groups furious

"Lamentable", "ignoble": LGBT associations were furious Thursday, after the rejection by the Senate of the extension of the medically assisted procreation (PMA) to the couples of women and to the single people.

The Senate with a right-wing majority adopted in the night of Wednesday to Thursday the bill of bioethics, stripped of its emblematic measure: the opening of the PMA to all women. This provision can however be reinstated by the deputies.

"It is absolutely lamentable," reacted to AFP Véronique Cerasoli, SOS homophobia. "As of February 4, there are no more LDCs for all. Article 1 is rejected. We have passed a milestone," she lamented.

"Behind that, there are women who have been dragged around for years from debate to debate, punctuated by demonstrations by opponents" to the extension of the LDC. "It is contempt, an insult to lesbian women who have been waiting for the PMA for so long.

The opening of the LDC to all women was a promise made by President François Hollande (2012-2017) and then by Emmanuel Macron. For the past year, the text has been delayed due to the health crisis.

For Nicolas Faget of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Parents (APGL), "there is a lack of political ambition behind what happened in the Senate". "The PMA for all was a promise of Emmanuel Macron but we haven't heard him on the subject for more than two years. Now is the time to hear him," he argued.

"The Assembly will reinstate the text, so we do not worry too much," said Nicolas Faget. "But that the Senate exploits the families for a political quarrel, it is despicable. It is disgusting to play with the hopes of the families", he exclaimed.

The Senate "plays with the nerves of the French women", wrote in a press release the association "Les Enfants d'Arc en Ciel". "Many women await this law. Imagine their feeling by learning that the Senate does not grant them the access to the PMA!"
