UN: The Trans Day of Remembrance

tdor2018 #transdayofremembrance November 20 is Trans Day of Remembrance: around the world, trans and gender diverse people lost to violence are remembered. This year, to commemorate the 368 lives taken in the last twelve months, it's vital to know that Human Rights bodies see this violence and are reacting, with one voice, to stand up for trans rights.

The Trans Day of Remembrance takes place every year on 20 November to memorialize those whose lives have been taken as a result of transphobia and to draw attention to the continued violence endured by trans and gender-diverse people. In a video prepared by Transgender Europe, various Special Rapporteurs spoke out and called for decision and policy makers to fulfil their obligations to protect trans people from violence and develop concrete measures to address violence and discrimination against trans communities worldwide.

The video features the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Mr. Felipe Gonzalez Morales, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, Ms. E. Tendayi Achiume, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Mr. Léo Heller, the Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, Mr. Dainius Pūras, the Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity, Mr. Victor Madrigal-Borloz and the Council of Europe Commissioner for human rights, Ms. Dunja Mijatovic.
