Equality Tasmania will lobby the government to make financial recompense to people convicted of historic homosexual and transgender offences. An independent, 88-page report to the State Government made 14 recommendations, including expunging charges and criminal convictions and making a one-off ex-gratia payment of a fixed amount.
The report reviewed Tasmania's legislation expunging historical criminal records for homosexual sex and cross-dressing which passed in 2018.
Equality Tasmania spokesperson, Rodney Croome said on the basis of the review's recommendations he would lobby the government to "repair the damage through financial recompense".
"It was a mistake not to include financial compensation in the original expungement legislation, given the trauma, indignity and disadvantage caused by conviction," Mr Croome said.
"The injustice suffered by those who were convicted demands more than acknowledgement and expungement, it demands recompense. Read more via Examiner
