In the timely words of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, the former Prime Minister of Iceland and the first openly LGBT head of state, “It is absolutely imperative that every human being’s freedom and human rights are respected, all over the world.” Yet, this is not a reality everywhere, and LGBTQIA+ individuals in particular, often face a difficult battle not only for recognition and representation, but for acceptance and for the freedom to be themselves.
The planet is perched on the precipice of what could be a powerful paradigm shift. The current social upheavals—all simultaneously coming to the surface—present a narrow window of opportunity to re-stage the stakeholders who sit at the table of collective decision-making and policy implementation. There has been no more opportune time to launch an initiative to dismantle archaic systems of oppression and demand the unequivocal validation of LGBTQIA+ people everywhere.
Within this context, the Global Shapers—in partnership with Young Global Leaders, allies, and friends—are proud to host the 1st Annual #ShapePRIDE Summit, a gathering of young leaders and activists around the world to engage in conversations to chart the path forward.
What is #ShapePRIDE?
#ShapePRIDE is the first ever PRIDE initiative by Global Shapers, Young Global Leaders, allies, and friends. Both a media campaign and an event, #ShapePRIDE establishes an annual commitment from the Global Shapers to engage in matters of import for LGBTQIA+ people around the world.
Do I have to be a part of the LGBTQIA+ community to participate in #ShapePRIDE?
No. Participation in the #ShapePRIDE campaign and the #ShapePRIDE Summit is inclusive of everyone! We actually encourage participation from people within and outside our LGBTQIA+ communities. This initiative is open to all Global Shapers, Young Global Leaders, World Economic Forum Communities, friends, and relatives.
So, anyone can attend the #ShapePRIDE Summit?
The #ShapePRIDE Summit is open to Global Shapers, Young Global Leaders (YGLs), World Economic Forum staff, and some invited guests. If you are not a Global Shaper, YGL or Forum staff and you want to find out if you can be invited to the #ShapePRIDE summit, do reach out to us on the contact form.
What are the Global Shapers and can I get involved?
Born out of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional and global challenges. We strive to drive dialogue, action and change. Summit participants may be eligible to apply for membership in the hubs in your respective cities. Please stay tuned for more information if you are interested in learning more.
