Ecuador: Organizations announce collection of signatures to veto the Health Code

The National Front for the Family together with other civil society organizations and religious groups announced yesterday in Guayaquil the beginning of the collection of signatures and mobilizations to request the total presidential veto of the Organic Health Code (COS), a norm that was approved by the National Assembly, last Tuesday, August 25.

Geraldine Weber, a spokeswoman for the front, indicated that they have already defined a format to begin the collection of signatures that will be taken to President Lenin Moreno and invited all who are in favor of the veto to sign the petition in the Plaza San Francisco de la Guayaquil city from Monday to Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The front also made a call to participate in the caravan for the total veto on September 19 in Guayaquil at 10:00 am.

Among the articles for which the organizations demand that the code be totally violated, the front points to article 9, which refers to emergency abortions. Also article 115 that talks about teaching sex education in educational centers, article 196 on surrogacy and 208 in which all kinds of sexual orientation recovery therapies are prohibited.
