Ecuador: Pro-life groups ask for a total veto of the COS and announce protests

Nine pro-life and religious organizations are calling for a total veto of the Organic Health Code (COS), recently approved by the National Assembly. This Wednesday, September 9, 2020, the groups announced a mobilization during the weekend. For Erwin Ronquillo, from the National Front for the Family, one of the worrisome aspects is the interruption of pregnancy.

The COS is addressed under the issue of gynecological-obstetric emergencies or "abortions of any kind and for any apparent cause and all pathologies that compromise maternal-fetal health, so they must be treated in a timely manner."

The front representative warned that any government program that does not include the defense of life and the family will be strongly questioned. "Plus, it's going to be extremely relevant when we cast our vote," he said. For their part, organizations for the defense of women's rights ensure that the new Code guarantees constitutional rights such as confidentiality and sexual and reproductive health services, as well as timely care in case of obstetric emergencies.
