Attorneys and leaders for OUTBermuda confirmed that the “long-awaited, final stage of appeal for Bermuda’s historic marriage equality decision will take place in London on December 7 and 8, 2020.”
The Bermuda Government’s landmark appeal against same-sex marriage risks being thrown out by the Privy Council after a crucial deadline for the case was missed last month.
The Opposition leader said he would vote in favour of same-sex marriage, after his thoughts changed in wake of a referendum on the subject three years ago.
The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee wants all British Overseas Territories (OT), including those in the Caribbean, to legitimise same sex marriages.
A ruling by the Court of Appeal to allow same-sex marriage in Bermuda could have international implications, a lawyer involved in the case said yesterday.
Government confirmed this morning [July 5] that they have filed an appeal in the same sex marriage legal case, adding that they “look forward to having this matter heard by the Court of Appeal.”
“No reasonable court, properly directing itself, could possibly find that providing differing types of legal recognition for same-sex and heterosexual couples was not differential treatment in general terms,” said Mr Justice Kawaley.
